What Is a Doula

Building blissful Births

Doulas are trained professionals who provide non-stop, unbiased and compassionate support throughout pregnancy, labor & delivery, postpartum care, the first steps into parenthood, breastfeeding support, and trauma release.

Doulas educate their clients to enable them to make informed decisions, know their rights and providing contact numbers, and more of chiropractors, physicians, lactation consultants, other doulas, midwives, gynecologists, clinics, hospitals, birthing units and so much more.

Doulas assist in natural pain relief in labor, emotional and physical support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Doulas can provide other non-birth related services such as:

  • Antenatal classes

  • Photography

  • Placenta encapsulation

  • Belly binding 

  • Hydrotherapy

  • Pregnancy/infant massaging

  • IVF companion

  • Bereavement doula 

  • Termination of pregnancy companion

  • Counselor

  • etc.

After assessing birthing needs, doulas create a personalized birth plan to support each growing family.

 

Research shows the following when a doula is present at a birth:

  • 25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean; the largest effect was seen with a doula (39% decrease)*

  • 8% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth; the largest effect was seen with a doula (15% increase)*

  • 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief; the type of person providing continuous support did not make a difference

  • Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average; there is no data on if the kind of person providing ongoing support makes a difference

  • 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score; there is no data on if the type of person providing continuous support makes a difference

  • 31% decrease in the risk of dissatisfaction with the birth experience; mothers’ risk of dissatisfaction with the birth experience was reduced with continuous support provided by a doula or someone in their social network (family or friend), but not hospital staff
